Student Involvement at WXPN

WXPN offers the opportunity for local students to gain meaningful, hands-on experience at a nationally recognized leader in Triple-A radio. We hire students studying media, production, engineering, journalism, marketing, public relations, photography, design, business, non-profit management and related fields, and we provide a practical extension and enrichment of a student’s coursework. WXPN is a remarkable work environment for motivated and independent individuals. Many students who start working with us their freshman year continue at WXPN until their education is complete.

WXPN Summer Internships 2020

WXPN welcomes students to apply for unpaid internships. Intern applicants need to be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 5pm. Most internship positions require a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week.

How to Apply

  2. Gather any supplemental materials an internship may require

Include in the subject line: “Internship Application_first and last name”. Submit an application pack for each internship.

Please note: It will take approximately four weeks for your application to be processed. Due to the large volume of applications, we are unable to notify applicants who are not selected for internships.

Summer 2020 Internships

Development Internships

  • Member Services
    Hours: 10-20/week This is an opportunity for a student interested in communications pertaining to a non-profit organization to apply and build his or her skill set to help assist the Membership Department

Digital and Web Internships

  • Editorial Content Writer, Music Intern
    Hours: 15-25/week If you have a passion for music, a background in writing and a working knowledge of social media, we want to hear from you. WXPN is seeking a blogging intern to work on The Key, the station’s website covering the Philadelphia music scene. Interns will write short-form posts covering new music, tour announcements, show previews, concert reviews, record reviews, news updates, and more.
  • Photography Intern
    Hours: 10-20/week This is an opportunity to capture events at WXPN such as World Cafe studio sessions, Free at Noon concerts, special events and more. This internship also provides experience maintaining the station’s rich photography archive.
  • Video/Film Intern
    Hours: 15-20/week This is an opportunity for a Cinematography and Film/Video Production student to apply his or her skill set through real world situations and build a portfolio of published projects.
  • Web Team Intern
    Hours: 15-30/week This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience at one of America’s Top 25 music websites assisting the digital content team with daily website and archive management.

Marketing Internships

  • Graphic Design
    Hours: 10-15/week This is an opportunity for a Graphic Design or Commercial Advertising Art major to apply his or her communication through design skills in real world situations and build a portfolio of published projects.

Programming Internships

  • Morning Show News
    15 hours - 20 / week (3 days/wk. 6:30am-9:30am) This is an opportunity to research and write news stories for the XPN Morning Show. Position may include editing interviews into sound bites for newscasts depending on knowledge of digital audio editor.
  • World Cafe Production
    Hours: 10-20 Hours/week This internship provides an understanding of the production process for a nationally syndicated public radio show, and is an opportunity to learn the basic principles of recording and editing interviews and music.
  • World Cafe Programming
    Hours: 15-40 Hours/week This internship provides a valuable opportunity to gain experience supporting WXPN's NPR-syndicated radio show, World Cafe, through a broad range of tasks.

WXPN Work Study Jobs

UPenn students with a Federal Work Study grant can go to the Student Employment Office to search for available Work Study jobs at WXPN and type in the Keyword: WXPN. Because of WXPN's affiliation with the University of Pennsylvania, we only work with Penn Work Study Students. If you are a Work Study Student from another school, you are welcome to apply for our unpaid internships.
